*This course will be conducted in both English and Mandarin.

This course is taught in 16 weeks of lectures. It is designed to give students an introduction to Mary Shelley, her key works, concepts, and the literary culture of the first half of the 19th century.

No prior knowledge of the author or period is required. In general, the course is meant to stimulate exploration of primary and secondary texts, and of literary historiography. Particular attention will be paid to two novels by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein (1818) and The Last Man (1826), as well as the "first gothic novel"-Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto (1764).

This course will situate Shelley's works in the traditions of Gothic, Enlightenment, and Romanticism. Topics to be discussed in this course will include the Gothic, passion, revolution, Romanticism, Enlightenment rationality, intellectual aspiration, among others, in order to offer students knowledge of this period and to familiarise them with its historical, cultural, and political contexts.

課程目標
This course hopes to introduce students to some of the best works in this period. On completion of this course, students should be able to relate the novels to both the Enlightenment and Romantic periods. Students should also be able to draw the connections between the novels with major ideas, political events, and cultural changes in this period.

課程要求
Late/Make-up Policy:

Students are responsible for submitting their answer sheets on time.

There will be a number of quizzes during the semester. As these quizzes are designed to ensure that students read the assigned novels before class, no make-up quizzes will be allowed.

Due dates for 2 movie-reflection reports will be announced in class and also noted on NTU COOL website. This means that these reflections are due on those days. However, I recognise that sometimes laptops/computers can go on strike. In these instances, please email your works directly to me 24 hours of the due date. Please note that in this case, your work will only be eligible for 80% of the maximum number of points. Reports submitted more than 24 hours after the due date will not be accepted, unless reasonable excuse is provided beforehand (for sick leave, official medical report should be presented).

Students need to take one final exam. No make-up exam will be allowed, unless reasonable excuse is provided beforehand (for sick leave, official medical report should be presented).

No make-up quizzes will be allowed.
